Are you Generating Traffic the Correct Way?
By: Wealthy Wal
If you've ever visited forums where newbie marketers post, it won't take you long to realise that the most frequently asked question is: "Whats the best way to drive traffic to my website?" It's an obvious question, because without traffic, there is no point of having a website. So what really is the best way to get traffic?
The majority of newbie marketers make the mistake in focusing all their efforts on one form of traffic generation. I'm not saying that you should learn all the methods at once, but all too often you see people who aren't even willing to use more than one method of traffic generation. I'm sure you've run into the guy who is in love with Adwords or the guy who praises Search Engine Optimisation, right?
The very best way to drive targeted traffic to your site is with a multi-pronged attack. You want to get traffic from all over the place. This is because each method has it's pros and cons. I'm going to run through the main forms of traffic generation I use myself and the pros/cons for each.
Pay Per Click Search Engines
A lot of buzz has been generated about PPC recently and for good reason. Never before has there been a way that you can have visitors flocking to your site within a couple of hours. The biggest advantage to this is that it allows you to optimise your sites conversion rate. Theres no huge waiting period, you simply setup Adwords or Yahoo and you can instantly see how the changes you make affect sales or whatever your call to action is. On the down side, PPC can be very expensive and therefore not worth it, for some markets. If you have a site about Real Estate, then you are going to be struggling to find targeted keywords for peanuts. However, there are still plenty of cheap keywords available, trust me ;)
Search Engine Optimisation
This tactic has been around for quite some time. While it's a little more complicated than stuffing your meta tags full of keywords, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is still worth your time and effort. If you optimise for the right keywords, then you have the potential to drive tens of thousands of visitors to your site. If you've learnt how to optimise your site correctly using PPC, then optimising your site for the search engines is going to make you a heck of a lot of money. However, it's not that easy. For starters, the popular keyword phrases have plenty of competition, sometimes more than a billion sites. To appear first for huge keywords is probably a bit much for a first attempt, so middle of the road keywords are probably more for you. The downside is that even for these keywords, it can take 6 months of continual work before you see any results. However, once your hard work pays off, if you've done it correctly, it will be worth it.
Article Marketing
This is a method I don't think enough marketers use to it's full potential. It's a simple method really. You create articles that are packed with useful information and then you post them on article directories. This helps you out in several ways. Firstly, if you get enough articles out on the web, more people are going to read them and if they find them useful, then they are likely to visit the link you are allowed to place at the bottom of the article. This can also be beneficial for SEO as those links help your rankings. The downside to article marketing is that it can be quite time consuming, but if you're new and low on funds, get stuck in, because it's free. Although, if you have some extra cash, you can easily get articles outsourced very cheaply.
Forums
Here is another overlooked method of traffic generation. Whatever your niche is, I will guarantee there is a forum for it. If you don't know any, just do a google search for "your niche + forum". Once you arrive in the forum, make sure you don't simply make posts like "Hey I have this fantastic website you should check out..". Doing that is a sure way of getting yourself booted from the forum, or not taken seriously. The best way is to show people, through your posts, that you know what you are talking about. Establish yourself as an authority in your area.
Viral Marketing
This isn't exactly a newbie strategy, but viral marketing is what makes the big bucks. Hotmail coined the term for it when they began back all those years ago. They just added a little note to the bottom of their emails that said "Get your free email account here..". As more and more people sent their emails, word about Hotmail spread like a virus. Popular methods for generating viral campaigns are to either distribute free ebooks or software. The key is they must be useful, no one is going to pass along useless crap. This can be hard to pull off, but be creative and you will come up with something, viral marketing can work in any market.
